“Do you photograph proposals?” one client asked during an office headshot session. “Of course! What do you have in mind?”
The idea was straightforward: invite his girlfriend to dinner, make a quick stop at the garden for a “pretty walk,” and surprise her there with a proposal she didn’t see coming.
On the evening of the proposal, I brought my husband along as a decoy. We arrived early, I tucked my camera into a large purse, and we settled on a bench near the stone archways like any other couple enjoying the space. We even pretended to take selfies, fully committing to looking uninvolved.
Once I got the text that they had arrived, I was on high alert. They strolled slowly together through the garden toward the red rose display, and the moment she began to realize what was happening, I stepped in and started photographing. The surprise landed fully, and her response was a perfect mix of shock, warmth, and even humor.
Afterward, we stayed to document the moments that followed: giddy laughter, marveling at her ring, and a FaceTime call to her brother overseas so he could be part of it. Being trusted to witness something so personal is never something I take lightly, and I felt grateful to be there for it exactly as it unfolded.
